How do you get Marfan Syndrome?
Marfan Syndrome is a genetic disorder, this means it can either be inherited from your parents or from changes in your genes. About 75% of the time, the Marfan Syndrome gene runs in the family, and gets passed down from parent to child. This is called heredity. The other 25% of cases, neither parent has the disorder (you cannot be a carrier of Marfans, you either have it or you don't.) The genetic mutation happens in the egg or sperm cell at the time of conception. No one knows what causes this mutation. A child born to a parent with Marfan Syndrome has a 50% chance of getting the disorder. Likewise, a child with Marfan has a 50% chance of giving the gene to their child.
Doctors that are involved in diagnosing Marfans include a geneist, ophthalmologist, and a orthopedist.
